SEE HOW Unilorin gives students opportunities to excel

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON),
has assured students of the School of
Preliminary Studies (SPS), Fufu, of
ample
opportunities to excel in their studies
and other extra-curricular activities.
Prof. Ambali gave this assurance last
Thursday (June 15, 2017), during the
commissioning of a Sports Complex
constructed by the SPS management in
the School premises.
Named after the Vice-Chancellor, the
Sports Complex has a standard Football
Field, a Basketball Court, Volleyball
Court, Badminton Court and a Table
Tennis set.Commending the School's
management on the project, Prof.
Ambali noted that the facility would
help to improve the academic
performance of the students as they
strike a balance between reading and
playing while also discovering their
talents in the field of sport.
The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the
project became necessary in order to
make the students channel their
youthful energy to positive use, adding
that the facilities would be included for
use during the forthcoming National
Youth Games to be hosted by the
University of Ilorin later this year.
Prof. Ambali assured the students that
the University main campus is waiting
for them upon the successful
completion of their preliminary studies,
reminding them that the University
places a premium attention on their
admission.
The Vice-Chancellor used the occasion
to inform the prospective students that
the University is a disciplined institution
with a dress code, zero tolerance for
examination malpractices, cultism and
other anti-social behaviour.
“You are coming into a University that
does not close its door on account of
industrial action. I am very proud of you
because the report of your good
conduct has reached me. You must be
rest assured that your admission is our
priority”, Prof. Ambali told the
enthusiastic students.
At the commissioning, Prof. Ambali
thanked the Director of the School,
Prof. Muhammed Mustafa Akanbi and
his predecessors for building the pre-
degree centre on a solid foundation. He
thereafter, undertook an inspection tour
of the facilities before watching a
novelty match between the Arts and
Science Departments, which ended 1 –
0 in favour of the Arts' Department.
Earlier in his remarks, the Director of
the School of Preliminary, Prof. Akanbi,
reiterated that the idea to construct the
Sports Complex was borne out of the
need to help students channel their
abundant youthful energies properly.
Prof. Akanbi thanked the Vice-
Chancellor and members of his
management team for the approval to
commence the construction of the
complex, noting that the School had
delivered on its promise that the
complex would be completed within
two weeks of approval.
He said, “With a huge sense of relief
and to the glory of God, I am happy to
inform the Vice-Chancellor and his
team that we have been able to fulfill
the pledge”.
Prof. Akanbi informed the gathering
that as part of the effort to instill
discipline, the Boardof the School has
approved only same-sex public-private
hostels arrangement that ensures that
teenage boys and girls are not
cohabiting.
“Through the public-private hostel
arrangements, we have been able to
employ over 100 youths from the
community to serve as porters and
security men in the University
controlled private hostels”, he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied
to the commissioning ceremony by the
three Deputy Vice-Chancellors, other
Principal Officers, the Provost, College
of Health Sciences, Deans of Faculties,
and Directors of academic and non-
academic units of the University.
